A functioning, user-friendly online experience isn’t just a nice-to-have. It can be a tool for connection and community. And creating those experiences is one of the best parts of our job.

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, many started new hobbies to fill the time, including everything from gardening to learning another language — and even raising sourdough starters.

But for aspiring breadmakers truly dedicated to perfecting their loaves, there was a hole in the social media landscape. Bread fans had to scroll through photos of babies and pets to actually find sourdough snapshots and check their baker’s math.

Enter Breadwinner, a platform that brings hobbyist breadmakers together to share insights, discover recipes and chart their progress.

Breadwinner came to us with the goal of building a social network and dashboard that could house everything an aspiring breadmaker would need — without having to sort through endless streams of dog and baby photos. (No offense to dogs. Or babies.)

The end result paired flair and function. Users could track their sourdough starters’ progress through line and bar charts and other engaging visuals. They could also engage with a community of other breadmakers, sharing photos, ratings, notes and recipes all on one platform.

And at a time when people craved community and connection — this was right at the beginning of the pandemic, after all — that networking function was more important than ever.
